Ellen was born in Wallsend, Northumberland in the March quarter of 1840, while George was born about 1839. They married at St Pauls, Elswick, Northumberland on the 4th of August 1864.
In 1871, Ellen & her children are staying with her parents, she is the wife of a Banking Clerk. George Snr dies in 1879, at only 40 years of age.

On the 29th of July 1879 at Christ Church, Newcastle, Northumberland to Matthew Swan, born December 1850.
By 1881, Matthew is a Coal Merchant and the family, inluding Ellen's children are living at 6 Marionople St, St Andrews, Newcastle. George, at 15 years of age is working as a Wharehouseman.
In 1891, Matthew is now working as a Railway Porter and they are living at 66 South View St, Byker. In 1901, they are living at 6 Coquet St, All Saints, Newcastle. Matthew is still working at the Railways.
By 1911, Matthew is a Foreman in the Railways, they are living at 5 Lonsdale Terrace, West Jesmond, Newcastle and Ellen's brother, Robert Thomas Fothergill, a retired pawnbroker, is living with them.
Ellen died in October 1918 in Newcastle; while Matthew died in the September quarter of 1927, also in Newcastle.
