Eleanor Buddle & Smart Atkinson

This is the story of Eleanor & Smart Atkinson. Eleanor was the sister of John Buddle Jnr, the eminent mining engineer of the early 1800's.
Smart Atkinson was born in Monkwearmouth around 1771 son of Thomas Atkinson (Innkeeper) and Eleanor Smart.  Eleanor was born in Lanchester in 1777, being baptised there on the 14th April 1777, daughter of John Buddle Snr and Ann Reah.

They married on the 10th August 1803 at Ryton, Co Durham and had a total of eight children.

  • John was born 12/5/1804 & died 7/9/1811.  He is buried with Smart & his paternal grandparents and Smart's two brothers at St Nicholas Church, West Boldon.
  • Eleanor, born in Monkwearmouth on the 18/11/1805,
  • Robert Thomas, born on the 22/5/1807 in Boldon
  • Mary, born about 1808
  • Ann Elizabeth, born on the 17/3/1809
  • Smart Jnr, born on the 5/9/1811
  • Elizabeth, born about 1815 in Fulwell
  • John Buddle, born on the 22/4/1817 in Monkwearmouth

Little is known of Smart's working life, though indications are that he was a gentleman farmer; this is however supposition.

Their oldest surviving son, Robert Thomas Atkinson followed his uncle John Buddle Jnr as a colliery viewer and became one of Buddle's principle heirs in 1843, inheriting a significant portion of Buddle's said wealth of some £150,000.

Smart died on 20/12/1816, most likely before the birth of their last child, John Buddle Atkinson.  Eleanor died in September of 1825 and was buried in St Nicholas Church graveyard, West Boldon on the  16th September 1825, she apparently died from Typhoid Fever.
