Robert Thomas Atkinson's career followed in the path of his uncle John Buddle Jnr; he became a colliery viewer & manager and upon John Buddle's death in 1843, Robert not only inherited a significant portion of his substantial fortune of some £150,000; but he also replaced him in his various roles as colliery manager & viewer.

Unfortunately, Robert only lived for a further two years and passed away in 1845. His only son, Buddle, being his main heir & beneficiary.  Robert, like John Buddle Jnr before him gave freely to the church, Buddle had donated the initial 1 acre of land and Robert donated a further 3/4 acre to extend the grave yard.  There is a memorial plaque in the church in his honour.

Robert Thomas died on 9/3/1845 at his home, Highcross House, Benwell, Northumberland and was buried with his Uncle John Buddle Jnr & John Buddle's sister, Ann; at St James Church, Benwell.

Mary then married the Reverend William Maughan, the first vicar of Benwell on the 20/4/1847 at St James Church, Benwell.

Upon Robert's death, Buddle was only five years old, so Robert's estate was held in trust for Mary & their children and was managed firstly by William Armstrong (a prominent Newcastle Industrialist) & Thomas Sopwith, then later by Sir Benjanin Chapman Browne & the Rev. William Maughan.
William passed away on 14/3/1877 and is buried in the grounds of St James Church, Benwell.  See photo below .

Mary passed away on 30/12/1882 at Benwell.  Annie, her daughter paid for a memorial stained glass window in her memory in St James Church, Benwell, photo to left.  Mary is buried with the Rev. William Maughan.
