It is with great joy I now have photos of the Grave of my Great Uncle

Lieutenant Geoffrey "Peter" John Buddle Atkinson

of the Worcestershire Regiment Died 10th June 1915

One of my dearest friends was lucky enough to get to go to Gallipoli for the commemoration of 100 years since the landing of the ANZACS at Suvla Bay, now known as ANZAC Cove.  After the day trip to ANZAC Cove for the organised commemorations, Tracey & her partner Tony returned to the Gallipoli Peninsula with one goal in mind, to find our Geoffrey's grave in Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery, Eceabat, Turkey.  Tracey has given us some wonderful photos of his headstone and the cemetery itself.  They placed a flower on his grave, probably the only time he has been visited by anyone even remotely related to our family since he died on the 10th of June, 1915.

Thank you again Tracey, my little "Sister"; these photos mean more to me than you can imagine.

Vale Lieutenant Geoffrey John Buddle Atkinson.

Identification of Family Members in Clara's Album

Jane Woolley and Sarah Goodwin (nee Boys-Stones) met in early June to look over Clara's album that is in Sarah's possession.  Given Jane has a photo that identifies Frank Buddle Atkinson and recognised her grandmother Aline, in this photo we are now fairly convinced on the identities of Clara's children.

Front:- L to R, Muriel Anna Bell Simpson, Robert Hugh Montgomery Buddle Atkinson & Aline Clara Gertrude Atkinson. Back:- Violet Florence Gwendoline Atkinson & Frank Buddle Atkinson.

Many thanks to Jane Woolley & Sarah Goodwin.

Aquisition of the Armorial Bookplates of John Buddle Jnr Esq & Buddle Atkinson

Bookplates (ex libris) have been used for many centuries, particularly armorial bookplates. Today the Armorial (coat of arms) Bookplate is out of fashion!  These have been purchased from collectors in the UK.

The Buddle Akinson bookplate is not by Thomas or any of the other Bewicks, even though it appears in Hugo's Catalogue of Bewick's works. Engraved on steel, not wood, it came from the workshop of Mark Lambert, a pupil of Thomas Bewick, but was actually designed and engraved

by George F Robinson, who had joined Lambert's staff in 1841 and who, in the course of 50 years service, became chief engraver and director of all art works carried out by the firm. The original drawing for this bookplate came into the possession of Belfast artist John Vinycomb, and the story of this bookplate and its owner is found in his 1896 book "Exlibris by Mark Lambert of Newcastle on Tyne".  The plate was made when Buddle Atkinson was a young child, perhaps for putting in books that had been owned by John Buddle (father and son) whose estates largely devolved on his sister Eleanor's son-in-law & son, Thomas Burnet Jnr and Robert Thomas Atkinson, father of Buddle. So a best guess for the date of the bookplate would be 1845-1850. Buddle Atkinson was for some years in the Royal Artillery.  He had four surviving children, the eldest son being Frank Buddle Atkinson.

April 2014 - Photos of Clara Daper (Atkinson/Bell Simpson) & Family

Sarah Goodwin (nee Boys-Stones) has turned up a photo album from Bradley Hall, Ryton; where Clara moved with John Bell Simpson after she remarried in 1886.  This album contains numerous photos of the Atkinson/Bell Simpson clan.  Unfortunately none of the photos are named, the only people we can be sure of are Clara, John Bell Simpson & their daughter Muriel.

The album is also unfortunately in poor condition as at some point in time it has been wet.  We are very lucky that it is still in the condition that it is in.  It could have been a lot worse.

Some of the photos are in the gallery to the right.

December 2013 - Parents of Smart Atkinson

As of January 2014, we have discovered the parents of Smart Atkinson.  His parents had remained a mystery to us until we found someone who had detailed the graves at St Nicholas' Church, West Boldon in County Durham.  His Father's name is Thomas Atkinson & his mother's Eleanor Smart.  The Smart name had totally thrown us, we never guessed that it would be his mother's maiden name.

We have since discovered their date of marriage.  They were married at Jarrow on 27 April, 1765, by licence. Thomas was shown as a gentleman, age 28; Eleanor was shown as 23 and both were shown as "of Jarrow." Witnesses were John Mitchell and Jonathan Kirton.  Neither witness has shed any light on further relationships.

Many thanks to Rodney Whale for his efforts in finding a fellow researcher who knew of this gravestone.
