Significant Family Members​

This page reflects a few of the significant members of our family, it is in no way intended to represent a complete or authoritative list or details of every member of the family.  Where would we stop?  It would take up too much time and space.

John Buddle Snr (1743 - 1806)​

 

 

John Buddle Snr was a Senior Mathematician who worked as a school teacher.  He entered the mining industry upon the request of friends who continually came to him for guidance with mathematical calculations for their own mining operations.  He gave his son a wide eduation, passing on to him a deep interest in mathematics and science.  He also gave Buddle Jnr a practical education in mining.. Buddle Snr became a colliery viewer and manager in the Wallsend district of Newcastle upon Tyne; a profession that Buddle Jnr followed. 

​​John Buddle Jnr (1773 - 1843)​

John Buddle Jnr was an eminent mining engineer of the late 1700's to the  early 1800's.  He was influential in the implementation of various mine safety standards, many of which were his own design or influence, including the concept of cross flow mine ventilation and the assisted design of Sir Humphrey Davy's mine Safety Lamp; which was used well into the 1970's by coal miners all over the world. John Buddle Jnr remained unmarried and died without issue.

Robert Thomas Atkinson (1807 - 1845)

Robert Thomas Atkinson was John Buddle Jnr's right hand man & nephew and heir to his fortune. He was also an incredibly bright mathematician and gifted musician. He and Mary had five children, two of whom, Mary Jnr & Robert Jnr, died prior to Robert's death.  He unfortunately died at the age of 38, only two years after John Buddle Jnr.  Mary remarried to the Reverend William Maughan, 1st Vicar of Benwell.

Buddle Atkinson (1841 - 1880)

Buddle Atkinson was the only surviving son of Robert Thomas Atkinson & Mary Ann Burnet.  Upon the death of Robert, he inherited the vast bulk of John Buddle Jnr's estate.  The estate was managed by family friend Benjamin Chapman Browne 2nd & his step father the Reverend William Maughan until Buddle reached age.  Buddle was survived by his wife Clara and their four surviving children.  His estate was inherited by his eldest son, Frank Buddle Atkinson.

James Finucane Draper (1836 - 1876)

James Finucane Draper was born on Guernsey in 1836. He was a talented watercolour painter and a caricaturist. Some of these works were published. He was also a playwright and several of his plays were performed at the Theatre Royal, Don Road and the Royal Hall in Peter Street. By 1869 he had acquired a studio at the Masonic Temple, Stopford Road, but he was to die only seven years later aged only 41 in 1876. He is best known for his watercolours of Channel Island scenes, but they are comparatively rare. He taught his younger brother Charles Draper, who was also born in Guernsey. Collections of his work are held by the Jersey Heritage Trust and the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery. James is the brother of Clara Elizabeth Atkinson (nee Draper) and the father of Clara Eliza Draper who married Frank Buddle Atkinson.

​Frank Buddle Atkinson (1866 - 1953)

Frank Buddle Atkinson married Clara Elizabeth Draper, his first cousin, daughter of his mother's brother. Frank bought a property called Gallowhill Hall at Morpeth in 1902, at which time he sold his parents' family home, Woolley Grange.  Frank became the High Sherrif of Northumberland in 1941.

Lorna Buddle Atkinson m. William (Bill) Holden Bremner

Frank's daughter Lorna married William Holden Bremner.  Bill had a glittering military career in the Royal Navy, which ultimately led to a mysterious and largely unknown career in espionage. Due to the pressures of espionage during WWII, Bill & Lorna seperated in 1944. Visit the Bremner Family Roots site for more details on Bill.

Military Service

There is a proud history of Military Service in the Buddle Atkinson Family.
​Buddle Atkinson served in the Royal Artillery (RA) as a Lieutenant after attending Sandhurst Royal Military Academy (RMA).
Frank Buddle Atkinson served in the Royal Artillery & Robert Hugh Montgomery Buddle Atkinson the Royal Navy, with Robert later serving in the Volunteer British Land Forces in South Africa during the Boer War.  Frank attended Sandhurst Royal Military Academy.
2nd Lieutenant Geoffrey John Buddle Atkinson died at Gallipoli in 1915 and is buried at Twelve Copse Cemetary, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey.  He served with the Worcestershire Regiment.
Robin Hugh Buddle Atkinson joined the British Army in the autumn of 1946, prior to his 18th birthday.  In 1948 he graduated from Sandhurst Royal Military Academy and served in Germany, the Middle East & Korea.  He retired in 1960 as a Major. At which time he emigrated to Australia, later marrying Juliet Ann Taylor in 1968.
 
Many others from other branches of the family have served in many theatres of war.  A good number gave their all and lost their lives for their countries.
