Ann (Annie) Atkinson & Sir Benjamin Chapman Browne 2nd

Annie, born 1838 in Newcastle, married Sir Benjamin Browne, born 26/8/1839 at Stouts Hill, Uley, Glocestershire, on 9/2/1861 at St. James Church, Benwell, Northumberland.  They were married by the Rev. William Maughan, Annie's step father.

He was an industrialist who was apprenticed to the Elswick works near Newcastle-on-Tyne. He became an expert in harbour works and became chairman of the merged R&W Hawthorn, Leslie & Co, a ship building & locomotive manufacturer; they built most of the Royal Navy's destroyers of the late 19th century & most of the 20th century.

Annie & Benjamin had nine children, the most notable being Edward Granville, who became an "Orientalist" of note. He gained a Professorship at Cambridge University and his studies centred on Persia, now known as Iran.

Their daughter, Helen Mary Browne, wrote some detailed letters to Ronald Buddle Atkinson regarding the family history with first hand references to Buddle & Clara Atkinson & their children and also referred to her Grandmother & step-grand father, Mary & William Maughan; these notes give us a significant insight into the lives that they led and the close family bonds that existed between siblings & cousins of the day.

Benjamin passed away on 1st March 1917 at Westacres, Newcastle upon Tyne and he is buried in St John's Cemetary, Elswick. Annie died in March 1929 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland.
