Mary Ellen Newton

& Joseph Tennet

Mary was born in Sunderland on the 28th February, 1878. On the 1st of August, 1898, she married Joseph Tennet at Monkwearmouth, Sunderland. Joseph was born on the 8th of November, 1876 in South Hylton, Durham. This marriage, like that of her brother Smart, was undoubtedly also a shotgun wedding, as Elizabeth was born in December of 1898.

 

By the census of 1911, they had had eight children, three of whom had passed away. Two of these are at this point in time unknown.

 

The family lived in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland.  Joseph was, like many others in the area, including Mary's brothers, a ship yard worker.

 

Joseph died in December 1953 in Sunderland and Mary passed away in September 1965, also in Sunderland.
