Smart was born on the 28th January 1874, he married Mary Ann McGuire on the 29th of June, 1913. Mary is  believed to have been born on the 25th of July 1879; however, like her date of death, this is yet to be confirmed. Their's was no doubt a shotgun wedding, as Isabella was born on the 26th of August 1913.

 

The couple had two children. The family spent most of their lives living in and around St Peter's & Monkwearmouth areas of Sunderland.

 

In 1915, Smart signed up for service in WW1. His address at the time was 33 Soucty Lane, Sunderland. He served in France as a Gun Loader and as a result he suffered from Deafness.  He was a slightly naught boy with some AWOL & drunkeness offenses against his name.

 

His occupation before going o war was as a Shipyard Labourer, what he did after the war is at this stage a mystery.

 

He died in the March quarter of 1953 in Sunderland. It is probable that Mary died in June of 1971, also in Sunderland, aged 91 years; however this cannot be confirmed at this stage.
