Elizabeth was the second child of Eleanor & William Hughes, born at Southwick, Durham, on 21/5/1879.  On 17/10 1898 she married Thomas Cook Smith at Monk-Wearmouth, Co. Durham. Thomas was born 11/7/1869.

 

In 1901,  Thomas was was a Boilermaker, at this point in time they only had one child, William, born about 1899.  Elizabeth's father William, by now a widower was living with them, along with his other five children.

 

By 1911, they had four surviving children, there are two unknown children who had died. In 1911, Elizabeth's siblings Henry & Isabella are also still living with them. Thomas is a ship plate riveter, their son William at twelve years of age is an apprentice ship plate riveter and Elizabeth's younger brother Henry is also an apprentice ship plate riveter.

 

They had another child, Isabella Mons Smith on 23/12/1914.

 

Thomas passed away on 21/1/1945 and Elizabeth passed away on 12/10/1960 aged 81 years, both died in Sunderland.
