Mary Ann was born about January 1840 in Fulwell, Durham. In 1841, Mary Ann is listed as living with her parents at Fulwell Hill, Northumberland.  By 1851 they had moved to Wandlass Place, Southwick, Sunderland where William was now a seaman shipwright.
