Robert Thomas Fothergill & Fanny Margaret Mason

Robert was born about 1836 in Wallsend, Northumberland, UK and Fanny was born on the 25th August 1838 in All Saints, Newcastle. They were married on the 5th of June, 1860 in Newcastle. There is little doubt that this was a shotgun wedding, as their first child, John Buddle Fothergill was born on the 13th December 1860. He was the first of seven children to the couple.

In the 1861 census, they were living in Summer St, Byker, Newcastle; Robert was a Pawnbroker.

Tragedy struck in October of 1873 when their third born child, Fanny died of Scarletina (Scarlet Fever) at six years of age.

In 1881, they are still living in Byker, John Buddle has joined his father in the Pawnbroking business. For some reason, perhaps a visit, Florence is staying with her maternal grandparents.

By 1891, it appears that they may have been living apart, as Robert is with his mother at 128 Balingbroke St, Heaton, Newcastle, living by own means and Fanny has Nellie & her husband, Florence, Henry & Robert Jnr living with her at 37 Elwicks Lane, All Saints, Newcastle; she is working as a Ladies Nurse at 52 years of age.

Fanny passed away on the 23rd of June 1900.  Robert is noted as her husband in her Probate record, but not her beneficiary.

In 1901, Robert is living with his daughter Florence & her husband George Wood at 41 Beresford Road, Byker, Newcastle.

By 1911, he is living with his sister Ellen Jane & her 2nd husband Matthew Swan in West Jesmond, Newcastle.  He died on the 12th of November 1914, at which time he is living at 65 Shield St, Jesmond, Newcastle.
