Samuel Newton was born at Fulwell, Sunderland, about 1834, he married Sarah Bruce, born about 1833 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire, Scotland.

 

From a young age Samuel became known as Smart.

 

They were married in the September quarter of 1856 in the Sunderland Registration District.

 

Smart & Sarah had five children, with so far only one having a family.  Smart was a shipwright.  In the 1911 census, Smart is living in the Poplar Union Workhouse, at 86 High Street, Poplar, Essex.  Why he is living in the Union run workhouse at 76 years of age is a mystery.

 

Smart's date of death is unknown and Sarah died before 1911, as Smart is listed as being a widower in the 1911 census.
